yeah that definetely helps a lot, I really had no idea how much it would cost, I have a better mpg car and am willing to stop in rest stops so it will probably be even less, thanks and that whole trip looked awesome

Hey CB, it’s hard to answer those questions just from the standpoint that everybody’s going to want something different. My goal for the trip was to see a little of everything, so it made sense to move on after a day or two in most cases (plus I get bored easily). Cost was about $3K a month, but again, that’s doing it the way I did it (in a low-MPG truck, paying for campgrounds most nights, and paying for hotels the other nights). Would’ve been much cheaper in a more efficient car and if I’d gone ahead and slept in rest stops and/or found free BLM sites to camp in. Hope this helps!

also I’m only 19 and going with my friend would you recommend doing it like you did and going everywhere for a day/two days or pickin like 7 cities and 10-15 national parks and going to each for an extended period of time

I found your site while Googling “cross country road trip maps” and have really enjoyed checking this out. It’s actually been helpful to me planning my own big impending journey. My idea is to set out at the beginning of September, by myself, in my Prius with a little teardrop trailer, photographing my way across the country and back. Nice to see I’m not the only one crazy enough to do this! I’ll very likely create a photo blog for my trip — if you’re interested, I’ll send you the link when the time comes.

It was one of the best things I’ve done in my life and I think pretty much everyone should do whatever they can to do something similar as soon as possible. Seriously.

I’ve been trying to figure out whether/when I would do it again — my only concern is that it’ll feel trite or that there wouldn’t be much sense of discovery a second time around. But then again, I’m guessing in a few years my perceptions will have changed enough to make it fresh again. We’ll see how it goes.

I found your blog on one of your posts on Road Trip America. It has been a pleasure reading it. Thank you for sharing everything.

Now that the trip has been over for a while I was wondering what your reflections on the trip have been like. Do you regret it at all? Would you ever do it again someday? Would you recommend it to anyone else that was interested?

Didn’t Mr. Swasey jump over the canyon without his horse? DIfficult parsing of the sentence: Jumped with his horse; landed without horse.
Jumped over the canyon on his horse but a la Archimedes, the horse never reached the finish line.
Or zen-like: The horse reached the finish line, but did not cross the finish line (the actual AAU rule on track meet races).
I did a search this weekend to find what canyon Rod jumped. It’s not on Wikipedia and he’s not named in relation to Butch or to the Hole-in-the-Wall (which was not a single gang, but was like a pirate port).
